To Do List: Enter Contest to Win "Divergent". Check!

Woo! Day two in Blogworld for me! :D Well, here goes with today's post...

I don't know about you, but I think there have been a TON of seemingly amazing young adult books come out this year, and it's only half over! Though there are many I want to read, there is one in particular that I have been on the edge of my seat over: "Divergent" by Veronica Roth. It is a dystopian novel that released May 3rd. I haven't read many dystopian novels (The Hunger Games included) but this one certainly grabbed me from the blurb. I haven't gotten to read all of it yet--I've read the first 100 pages offered at harpercollins.com--and it's driving me crazy. I need to buy it, get it at the library, or win it--which I'm trying to do ^_^

If you aren't familiar with "Divergent" the book is about a girl named Tris who lives in a dystopian Chicago. The society is divided into five factors--Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On a certain day all sixteen year olds must choose which faction they want to spend the rest of their lives in. A person can choose an all new faction and leave their family behind, or remain in the faction they are familiar with. The book follows which decision Tris makes.

"One Choice Can Transform You" is the book's motto. And for Novel Novice's contest it was all about choices; about which faction we would choose if we lived in Tris' world.

This was a hard subject for me, only because I was at a crossroads. I could certainly see myself spend the rest of my life studying and with my nose pressed in books, but when it comes to Erudite's initiation, I had to think realistically. There is a good, horrific chance that I would epically fail. If you read the book, you will discover what happens to those who fail initiation--I don't want to spoil it for you.

My other option was Amity. They cherish many of the aspects that I do: truth, kindness, self-sufficiency, forgiveness, and involvement. I could see myself in Amity; I felt confident, so I made my choice. I would be Amity.

I find it a good thing that our societies aren't divided into these factions. In real life, I would never be able to choose between Erudite and Amity. Luckily it was just a writing contest that is still open until midnight tonight (Pacific Time if I have it right) on novelnovice.com. The top 5 winners will receive a copy of the book! *Excitement!!*

Just out of curiosity, which faction would you choose? And are you interested in reading the book? Or have you all ready read it--if so what did you think, I would love to hear your opinion?

  1. Hi it's me! :) I was curious too on what faction I belong to, until I took the Divergent Quiz on Facebook Divergent Page(have you checked it already?) So as much as I wanted to be Dauntless or an Erudite maybe, the result surprised me! I was a Candor! Maybe I'm not intelligent or brave enough haha! But I won't choose Abnegation, ços I know in myself that I'm not selfless enough, and I don't wanna be plain :) But since the result doesn't have to change your decision, I will choose Dauntless. I always wanted to be brave, and to stand for other people and maybe I could meet someone like Four? lol! But kidding aside, it would be nice in Amity too... I don't know, but it would be Dauntless or Amity for me :) Totally opposite :)

  2. I took that quiz and I got Candor, too. I don't see how though. On the question about the old lady who holds up a book you know you have read, and asks if you have read it--and if you answer yes, you know she will do something terrrible to you--not to sound horrible, but I put I would lie and tell her I hadn't. So...I don't see how I got Candor *scraches head* lol.

I would love be Dauntless! I've always wanted to be brave, too, but I would be too chicken to even try it; I know I would end up factionless :( So, I'm baffled between Erudite and Amity in the end. I would've had a serious problem when I turned sixteen lol.

  7. Yeah, you are totally selfless :). Every time I ask someone which faction I belong in they say Abnegation, too. I'm like "Thanks, but, ehhh..." There is a lot more too it in the book than just being selfless. I don't think I could do it lol. I'm too selfish :( Lol.

Here is the link if you would like to check out the first 100 pages from the publisher: http://browseinside.harperteen.com/index.aspx?isbn13=9780062024022

  9. Lol Agnegation is a good thing, but I agree, I don't think I could live that way either.

And on your blog, I thought your "Currently Reading" section was brilliant, so I took inspiration and made one of my own. I hope you don't mind :)
